Considered by many to be the greatest Illini team ever, the "Flying Illini" started off the season 17-0 and ranked #2. They lost 3 of the next 4 but finished the regular season ranked #4. Once in the NCAA tournament, they knocked off McNeese State, Ball State, Louisville and Syracuse before facing Michigan (a team they had beaten twice already in the season. In a game that saw 33 lead changes, Illinois fell to the eventual National Champion Wolverines 81-83.
